As you may recall, we have been posting suggestions from Phil Youngblood, a retired university professor who is both a lover of the natural world and an active member of the Texas Master Naturalist Program. In Nature Journaling - Part II Phil offered three approaches to nature that he felt would spark a writer’s interest: Learn, Socialize, and Do.
Sure enough, Lorraine Tillbury (who recently shared her nature walk at Chenonceau Castle) was inspired by the synchronicity of Phil’s post. She was about to host a family reunion at her French Loire Valley country home and this provided a perfect opportunity for her to takes notes and lots of photos. Thank you Lorraine for sharing your thoughts and your beautiful gathering with us.
LEARN: What are the names of the birds that we hear singing around our home? We discovered the Merlin app that identifies bird song with astonishing accuracy, developed by Cornell University ornithologists.
SOCIALIZE: Our oldest son introduced us to the Merlin app. We shared the Merlin app and the local natural landscape when we hosted a reunion of cousins near and far, in our French Loire Valley country home recently. The French call this type of family gathering a cousinade.
More than 60 family relations enthusiastically accepted our invitation and that weekend we were blessed with ideal weather. Many guests enjoyed our domestic animals (horses and dogs, with a special shout-out to the dear old pug Roadie in the photo. He crossed the 🌈 bridge two days ago, barely a month after this event), and took a walk in the neighboring countryside.
DO: I set up a staircase of pansies alongside our rose bushes. It was a delight to tend to their blooms and see them thrive just in time to welcome our guests.
